Is my child Autistic?

We can help you to answer both of those questions. Initially we can carry out an autism assessment, and let you know whether your child meets the criteria for Autism or not. The next steps will be the same either way… what happens next?

If your child is not Autistic, there has been a question or comment on difference that has led you to us and so we will aim to work out with you where to go next, who to see and what questions to ask. We trust your gut instinct that something is different and we aim to direct you to your next steps.

What next?

If your child is Autistic this is a big label to receive and we want to support you to process the diagnosis and to explain this to your child. Once you have digested this information you will be asking “what happens next?”. That’s where we can help further. More than just giving you the label, we aim to support you through identifying key areas to prioritise. We are specialists in our field (please see our blog on “specialists” vs “special interests”). However knowing where to start, which area to prioritise and where to go for help can be overwhelming. As parents ourselves we all understand that coming up with a ‘plan’ for your own child is impossible. This is where we can work together with you. We will provide you with a report and comprehensive recommendations.

Our Recommendations

Following our Autism Assessment Diagnostic Service, the recommendations made in your report can be implemented by services such as your child’s school, CAMHS, or other external professionals.

However, we can also offer direct additional packages of support. We have extensive clinical experience in successfully helping families and individuals make meaningful changes in the following areas:

  • Communication differences; Understanding and Processing, finding a way to express yourself
  • Alternative Communication systems and how to use these effectively in daily life, for minimally or non-verbal children
  • Behaviours that create barriers for accessing opportunities to education and the community
  • Providing positive support plans to help others to understand your child’s needs
  • Toileting
  • Sleep
  • Selective Mutism
  • Friendships
  • Stammering
  • Sensory differences
  • Eating
  • Understanding your own Autism

By trying to be neuroaffirming are we at risk of denying Autistic people’s identity?

When trying to use Neuroaffirming Autistic Identity language, are we at risk of denying Autistic people’s identity? Words matter! They can shape the way that people view and think about autism. When delivering Autism training I can feel slightly nervous when discussing terminology. I desperately want to model how to use neuroaffirming language to others, […]
