What Happens After an Autism Diagnosis? Supporting Your Child Beyond the Assessment.
Understanding Autism. Building Confidence. Supporting the Whole Family.
Receiving an autism diagnosis can bring relief, questions, and uncertainty for both young people and their families. While diagnostic assessments are essential, families are often left feeling unsure about what happens next. This is where post autism diagnostic support becomes so important.
Why post-diagnostic support matters
Children and young people benefit greatly from having time, space, and support to explore what autism means for them.
Without post-diagnostic support, autistic children / young people may:
- Feel confused or anxious about their diagnosis.
- Internalise negative messages about being “different”.
- Struggle to understand their emotions or sensory needs.
- Find it hard to explain what they need to others.
With the right support, however, autistic children / young people can develop self-awareness, confidence, and practical coping skills that will support them throughout life.
A neurodiversity-affirming approach
Our post autism diagnostic service is built on a neurodiversity-affirming framework. This means we do not view autism as something to fix or reduce. Instead, we help individuals understand that autism is a natural variation in how brains work.
We actively promote the message: Autism is a difference, not a deficit!
What does post-diagnostic therapy look like?
Our service offers a six-session, one-to-one therapy programme for autistic children and young people. Sessions are delivered face to face and are tailored to the child/ young person’s age, interests, communication style, and support needs.
The programme supports individuals to:
- Understand what autism means for them personally.
- Explore strengths, interests, and challenges.
- Recognise and regulate emotions such as anxiety and anger.
- Understand sensory processing differences.
- Identify triggers (including sensory) and early warning signs of distress / dysregulation.
- Learn and practice coping and regulation strategies.
- Build confidence and self-advocacy skills.
Sessions are interactive and engaging, using play, sensory regulation and movement activities, visuals support and structured tools, and discussion to help individuals feel safe and understood.
Supporting emotional and sensory needs
Many autistic individuals experience emotions and sensory input more intensely. They may feel overwhelmed by noise, light, busy environments, or unexpected change. They may also find it difficult to recognise or explain what they are feeling until they reach a point of distress.
Throughout the programme, individuals learn:
- How emotions show up in their body
- How to identify early signs of anxiety and / or anger.
- To identify personal sensory preferences and sensitivities.
- What helps them feel calm and safe and how to use coping strategies.
- How to ask for help and advocate for themselves.
Practical tools that make a difference
A key part of post-diagnostic support is creating tools that can be used beyond the therapy.
By the end of the programme, individuals will have:
- A One Page Profile summarising their strengths, needs, and supports.
- Individualised profile detailing sensory triggers and matched support strategies.
- A personalised calming kit and regulation tools.
- Practical strategies they can use at home, school, and in the community
These tools can be shared with schools and other professionals to improve understanding and consistency of support.
Supporting the whole family
An autism diagnosis affects the whole family, not just the child. Parents often tell us they want to support their child in the “right” way but aren’t always sure how.
Our service keeps parents informed and supported, helping families feel more confident in understanding their child’s needs and continuing strategies at home.
